Microsoft discontinues the Xbox Console Companion UWP App

On July 28, 2023, Microsoft announced that they will discontinue the Xbox Console Companion UWP App in a month. After August 28, 2023, app users will have to switch to the newer Xbox app for Windows.

The replacement provides access to PC Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Microsoft games for PC.

The original Xbox Console Companion was first introduced in 2015 along with the release of the Windows 10 operating system. With it, users could connect their Xbox consoles to a PC. The app allowed to use the social features of Xbox Live. However, active development of the application stopped a few years ago. Some of its features have been removed or moved to other apps.

The Xbox Console Companion isn't the only UWP app that Microsoft intends to replace. The classic Mail and Calendar software will soon be replaced by a new Outlook client for Windows. Canary builds of Windows 11 already ship the new Outlook bundled.
