YouTube now requires marking AI-generated deepfake videos

Beginning on March 18, YouTube content creators must add tags to their videos that are generated using artificial intelligence. This rule specifically pertains to realistic content that has the potential to be misleading.

As YouTube explains, one need to flag generated videos that show:

  • realistic people and actions they did not perform or words they did not say;
  • changing real events or places (for example, a generated fire in a real building or changing a real cityscape);
  • generation of realistic scenes (for example, a tornado moving towards a city).

The tagging tool is already available in Creator Studio. Information that a video was created using AI will be displayed in the rich description of the video or on the front of the video player: YouTube will add the label “altered or artificial content” or “sound or visual effects are significantly altered or digitally generated.”

The platform does not require creators to flag obviously unrealistic AI-generated content. This includes:

  • animation;
  • color adjustment or filters;
  • special effects such as background blur;
  • beauty filters or other visual enhancements.

A detailed list of examples can be found in the platform's help center . YouTube reminds that if the requirements are violated, the video may be deleted and the author may be disconnected from the monetization program.
