Surface Duo gets May 2021 firmware update

May 2021 firmware update is now available for US and European versions of Surface Duo - the only device in the Microsoft Surface family running Android, not Windows 10. The latest update brings regular Android monthly security fixes and general device/UI stability improvements. In addition to that, Microsoft has several specific bug fixes listed in the changelog. Here what is new in May 2021 firmware update for Surface Duo.

  • Addresses scenarios outlined in the Android Security Bulletin - May 2021.
  • User Interface and device stability improvements.
  • Fixes a bug when one screen would turn black while using Surface Duo in book mode.
  • Fixes scenario when a “Double-tap to switch screens” message was appearing when in book mode.
  • Fixes the issue when using the TalkBack with 3-button navigation where the list of recent apps was showing on the left screen when invoked from the right screen.

May 2021 firmware update for Surface Duo is now rolling out to all users in the US as version 2021.419.70. In Europe, the update has a slightly different version number 2021.419.72.

To install the latest updates for Surface Duo, you need at least 200 MB of free space, which is slightly less than the previous update in April 2021.

Android 11 for Surface Duo

Bear in mind that May 2021 firmware update contains only security patches, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements. Microsoft continues being silent about when Surface Duo will be getting Android 11. The smartphone still sits tight on Android 10 with no information about the operating system upgrade.

Surface Duo is not the only Surface device that received firmware updates this month. In May 2021, Microsoft shipped updates for Surface Pro 4, the original Surface Laptop, Laptop 2, Laptop 4the original Surface Book, Book 3, Surface Laptop Go, and Surface Studio 2.
