Microsoft removes EPUB support from classic Edge, too

A few days after announcing the discontinuation of EPUB support for their Chromium-based Edge browser, Microsoft is in the process of doing the same for the UWP version of the app. The bundled Edge app is losing EPUB support as well.

As of now, the classic 'Spartan' Edge browser includes the ability to read EPUB files. This feature was first introduced in Windows 10 Creators Update.

Classic Edge users start receiving a notification that tells about the end of support of EPUB books in the browser. It invites them to pick a suitable app for that from the Microsoft store.

According to Paul Thurrott, the notification tells the following:

Microsoft Edge will no longer be supporting e-books that use the .epub file extension. Visit the Microsoft Store to see our recommended .epub apps.

You can see that notification in the screenshot above.

The link attached to the notification points to the 'Reading room' of the Store that holds audio book apps in addition to ebook apps. The official announcement explains that in September 2019 Microsoft is expect to bring more EPUB reader apps to the Microsoft Store. Microsoft has established partnership with companies like the DAISY Consortium to add additional, accessible apps.

With this change, Windows 10 will no longer include a EPUB reader app out of the box. It is not clear what is behind this change, but it is definitely an unpleasant modification of the existing Edge functionality.
