Microsoft plans to secure their browser in an advanced way. By default, it will have the Balanced option in the Enhanced secure mode enabled. This change will apply to Windows, x64 macOS, x64 Linux, and ARM64 systems, and it can be reverted via a Group Policy.
Enhanced security mode, early known as "Super Duper Security Mode", is a feature that allows running unfamiliar sites without just in time (JIT) compilation, providing extra protection against malicious attacks. By running JIT-less, it reduces the attack surface and makes it challenging for malicious sites to exploit. This mode also includes Windows operating system mitigations such as Hardware Enforced Stack Protection, Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG), and Control Flow Guard (CFG) for added security.
The browser's roadmap states the following.
Enhanced security mode is being turned on by default to “Balanced” mode for x64 Windows, x64 macOS, x64 Linux, and ARM64 systems. Also, administrators have 2 new policies to manage the Enhanced security mode user experience: EnhanceSecurityModeIndicatorUIEnabled and EnhanceSecurityModeOptOutUXEnabled.
The change is set to go live in July 2023, which is the next month.
