Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 Photos app built with Windows App SDK

A new Photos app release is coming to Insiders in the Dev and Canary channel. Microsoft has started testing a new version of the Photos app for Windows 11, built using the Windows App SDK (WASDK). The build number is 2024.11040.1002.0.

It is the newer app version than the one that introduced the integration with Copilot.

The Photos app now uses the latest Windows application development platform, which should have a positive impact on stability and performance. This platform also offers a modern user interface known as WinUI3. The latest version of Windows App SDK is 1.5, released two months ago.

Microsoft specially notes that all the features of the Photos application are available in this new version. However, you may eventually hit into some minor bugs related to the new UI library. It is a work-in-progress since development has not yet been completed.

  1. Hopefully it’ll be more stable. The current app is incredibly unstable, especially if you use a NAS.
