Enable Reading View in Microsoft Edge

Mobile Edge Icon

Microsoft Edge comes with a new Reader mode, which might be familiar to Firefox and Vivaldi users. When enabled, it strips out unnecessary elements from the opened web page, reflows the text and turns it into a cleaner looking text document without ads, menus and scripts, so the user can focus on reading the text content.Edge also renders the text on the page with a new font and formatting in Reader mode. Here is how to enable it in Microsoft Edge.

With Reading View, Microsoft Edge provides a new, consistent, more powerful experience across all your documents, whether they’re EPUB or PDF books, documents, or web pages. The feature utilizes Fluent Design System elements like motion and Acrylic material to provide a fluid, delightful experience that keeps the focus on the page. The user can change the reading view style and font size according his or her preferences.

To quickly toggle Reading View, there is a special button in the address bar and a hotkey. Let's see how to use them.

To enable Reading View in Microsoft Edge, do the following.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the desired web page. E.g. the current article on Winaero supports the Reading View feature.
  3. Click on the Reading View icon. See the screenshot.
  4. Alternatively, press the Ctrl + Shift + R keys.

This will enable the Reading View feature in the Microsoft Edge browser.

It should not remove images or other important data.

When the Reading view is enabled, its icon in the address bar appears blue. When it is disabled, the icon is black, indicating that the reading view is currently turned off.

Note: If the Reading View button is not available (grayed out), this means that the current web page does not support reading view or the browser cannot figure out which markup elements can be removed.

By pressing the Ctrl + Shift + R keys in the enabled Reading view will disable it.

Change the Reading View style and font size

There is a special panel available in the Reading View. It allows applying different styles to the text.

To change the Reading View style, do the following.

  1. Press the Ctrl + Shift + O keys or click on an empty area on the page.
  2. Click on the font icon (See the screenshot).
  3. Modify the Text size, Text spacing, Font style, and Page theme options according to your preferences.

You are done.

I find Reading View a great idea when I want to read some long article without distractions. What about you?
