Edge restores Mica for titlebar and toolbar, here’s how to enable it

Edge Enable Mica Toolbar 03

The latest Canary build of the Edge browser brings back the Mica effect for the titlebar and toolbar. While it is still disabled by default, it is now easier to enable it with a couple of flags.

In Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced a visual effect called "Mica" to enhance the appearance and user experience of the operating system. Mica is a subtle and translucent material design effect that adds a sense of depth and dimensionality to various elements, such as windows, menus, and dialog boxes.

The Mica effect adds a frosted glass-like texture to these elements, allowing users to see through them to some extent while still maintaining a level of visual separation between different layers of content. This effect gives a more modern and refined look to the user interface, providing a visually pleasing experience.

Besides the OS itself, many apps support the new visual effects. For example, Google Chrome can use it for its titlebar.

In earlier builds of Microsoft Edge, you could already seen Mica in action. Microsoft enables and disables it in the browser, depending on how stable Edge with the effect enabled.  So the latest Canary build of Edge includes a flag for that.

To enable Mica for titlebar and toolbar in Microsoft Edge, do the following.

  1. Open a new tab in Edge, and paste edge://flags/#edge-visual-rejuv-mica.
  2. Enable the "Show Windows 11 visual effects in title bar and toolbar" flag by selecting Enabled from the combo box on the right.
  3. Restart Edge, and go to the browser settings.
  4. On the left, click Appearance.
  5. On the right, enable the Show Windows 11 visual effects in title bar and toolbar (Preview) toggle button.
  6. Click on the small Restart button to apply the change.

Congrats, the Edge browser now uses the Mica effect.
