Windows HDR Calibration app is coming to Windows 11

Microsoft is preparing a Windows HDR Calibration app for Windows 11. It is a counterpart of the Xbox HDR Game Calibration app, which was highly requested by games to become available on PCs. Windows HDR Calibration has been already teased to Insiders in the Dev channel.

The Xbox HDR Game Calibration app has long been available on Xbox  consoles. There, it makes displays and games work together when using high dynamic range (HDR). Unlike Xbox, Windows 11 offers a limited set of settings. There is no similar app for PCs for fine grain tuning of HDR. So light and dark areas of the screen may lose important visual details due to inconsistencies in HDR settings.

To get things work better, Microsoft is working on the new Windows HDR Calibration application. It is designed to solve the color issues and improve image consistency on displays connected to your PC.

As of this time, the Redmond firm did reveal when the app will appear in the Microsoft Store. The app announcement is included in the change log of the recently released Windows 11 Build 22557.

  • The Windows HDR Calibration app is coming to Windows PCs soon – you’ll be able to improve color accuracy and consistency on your HDR display. For easier access, you’ll be able to access this app via the Windows settings under System > Display > HDR You may see an early access point in HDR settings in this build, but as the app is not live yet, it will simply lead you here.

Windows HDR Calibration is expected to support three test patterns:

  1. To determine the darkest visible detail that you can see;
  2. To determine the brightest visible detail;
  3. To determine the maximum brightness of your display.

There is no additional information about the upcoming app yet. You can learn how to enable HDR in Windows 11 here.
