Windows 11 Build 23531 (Dev) makes Search open on mouse hover

Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23531 to the Dev Channel. The update is notable for opening all links in the default web browser for users in the European Economic Area (EEA). Also, it now open Windows Search pane automatically when you hover over the search box in the taskbar.

What's new in Windows 11 Build 23531 (Dev)

  • [Reminder] Dev Channel Insider Builds now expire on September 15, 2024. Make sure you have updated to the latest build.
  • In the European Economic Area (EEA), components of the Windows operating system now open links in the default browser.
  • Search on the taskbar: It now allows you to invoke the Search flyout when you hover over the search box on the taskbar. The behavior can be disabled on demand.

Fixes

File Explorer

  • Fixed an issue resulting in explorer.exe not working in safe mode.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause explorer.exe to crash when you close File Explorer.
  • Fixed an issue that caused File Explorer to crash when going to the Gallery section if it contained a large number of images.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in the "Auto Type in Search Box" feature not working when the home page is open in File Explorer.
    • Fixed an issue where trying to copy and paste a file from an archive to a OneDrive folder could cause File Explorer to crash with an error code.

HDR Background images

Fixed an issue that could cause HDR wallpapers to look blurry when HDR is on.

Task Manager

  • Fixed an issue that prevented moving the Task Manager window using the touchscreen or pen.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in Task Manager crashing when using the "Reset all settings to default" button in the app's settings.
  • Fixed an issue that occasionally caused the Task Manager to crash during use, including when clicking the End Task button.
  • Fixed an issue where after doing a search and then clearing the search bar, the content on the page was still filtered out.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in the text in the title bar of the Task Manager window overlapping the application icon.
  • Improved performance when switching between different pages of the Task Manager.
  • Updated the summary information for the Performance page (displayed when double-clicking on graphs in the navigation bar) to make the window smaller.

Note. Some of the fixes listed above may be included in cumulative updates for release versions of Windows 11.

Known Issues

  • Some apps in the Start Menu's All Apps list (such as PWA apps installed via Microsoft Edge) may be marked as system apps when they aren't.
  • Search on the taskbar: Sometimes the tooltip that appears when you hover over the search field does not match the selection of text.
  • Windows Copilot
    • You can use the Alt + Tab combination to exit Windows Copilot, but not return to it. To switch to Windows Copilot, use the combination WIN + C.
    • On first launch or after updating Copilot, when using Voice Access, you must use the Show grid command to then navigate to the Ask me anything field.
