Microsoft rolls out the .pst file support ahead of the plan in the new Outlook app

Microsoft is rolling out the implementation of .pst file support in the new Outlook for Windows faster than planned. This will make the transition to the new app more smooth. As you may already know, support for the Mail and Calendar apps ceases.

The new Outlook, a web-based application, currently lacks some features found in the Mail app and classic Outlook client. One significant barrier to migrating users has been the lack of .pst (Personal Storage Table) file support, which holds local copies of Exchange mailbox data, including emails, calendar events, and contacts.

Originally, Microsoft intended to introduce .pst support by March 2025, but the timeline has been revised, with the first phase now set to begin in January 2025. During this initial stage, users will have read-only access to email items stored in .pst files.

While calendar, contact, and task data within .pst files will remain accessible, they won't be available in this preview phase. Microsoft plans to extend .pst support in subsequent updates.

Recently, Microsoft has urged users to switch to the new Outlook on Windows 11, displaying notifications in the Mail and Calendar apps. They have announced that these older apps will cease to function after December 31, 2024.

Additionally, Microsoft has emphasized the advantages of the new Outlook, including integrated AI features that assist in composing emails with multiple suggestions and provide reminders to reply to messages. This new client also consolidates all emails in a single location.
