Microsoft has released a new PowerToys 0.71 version, which is mostly focused on stability and improvements. The new functionality includes the ability to preview archive files with Peek. Plenty of its components have also received a lot of improvements, including ColorPicker, FancyZones, File Locksmith, the Hosts editor tool, and more.
What's new in Microsoft PowerToys 0.71
Here are the highlights of this release.
- Support previewing archive files with Peek.
- Fixed PT Run crash caused by missing App.Dark.png file.
- Added setting to set Registry Preview as default app for opening .reg files.
- Modernized Settings app title bar and styling (Mica background material) to be inline with Windows 11 guidelines.
The general fixes and updates include resolving an infinite loop issue, updating package versions, fixing runner lag and crashes in the Settings app, as well as network errors, and a startup priority issue.
FancyZones now allows to use a middle click to toggle multiple zones spanning, and resolves several issues related to layout reset, and zoning.
File Explorer add-ons have received a number of improvements. You will find developer files preview support for various file types such as .vsconfig, .sln, .vcproj, .vbproj, .fsproj, .vcxproj, .vbs, .inf, .gitconfig, .gitattributes, .editorconfig, and .gitignore files. There have also been changes to the order of context menu items for developer files preview and a fix for flickering in the preview pane when selecting and resizing files.
Other changes
- ColorPicker now stores its color history in a separated file.
- File Locksmith now comes with a setting to show only in extended context menu.
- Hosts Editor now supports hotkeys and parsing fixes.
- In ImageResizer, you can set width/height of the new custom size by pressing the Enter key.
- Many fixes done to Mouse Without Borders, Peek, PowerToys Run, Quick Accent, and Registry Preview.

Download PowerToys 0.71
Users can download PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or GitHub. Existing users will receive this update automatically via the built-in update mechanism. Finally, the winget -s msstore powertoys
command will install the app suite on your Windows 11 PC.
