A new report suggests that the release Windows 12, the next major update, may be delayed in favor of an update to the current version of Windows 11, known as 24H2.
Reportedly, Microsoft is aiming for a September release for version 24H2 and plans to complete the update during the summer. The company is positioning this release as AI-focused, aligning with the arrival of next-gen AI PCs slated for 2024.
Given that version 24H2 will be based on a new Windows platform, there are several development phases before the update's general availability. Microsoft's goal is to finalize the new Windows platform release, codenamed Germanium, in April. Subsequently, the focus will shift to "finalizing" the version 24H2 update, which will be developed on the approved Germanium platform build.
The release of Windows 11 24H2 is most likely slated for September, while OEMs are expected to unveil new AI products in June. It is anticipated to be a significant release compared to the previous 23H2 version.
The departure of former Windows and Surface head, Panos Panay, has also caused potential delays for Windows 12. According to Windows Central, it is expected that Microsoft may eventually refer to the Windows 11 24H2 update as "Windows 12" due to its synchronization with PC and next-generation AI capabilities.
Recently, Dell made mention of "Windows 11 24H1," but this was later denied by a Microsoft representative as a typo. Rumors circulating on the Internet name June 2024 as a potential time for Microsoft to finish Windows 12, alongside a range of AI-powered devices. There is also hints that Windows 12 will be even more optimized for Arm chips. Microsoft didn't yet confirm any of these rumors.
