Change Touch Scrolling Friction in Windows 10

If you have a touch screen device with Windows 10 installed, you can tweak its touch scrolling friction. The friction is the amount by which the content scrolls up, down, left or right when you slide your finger to scroll.

Windows 10 is designed to work well on touchscreen devices. These days, there are plenty of Windows 10 devices including laptops, tablets, and 2-in-1 devices come with the touchscreen. The touchscreen can be used as the only input device or as a secondary input on a laptop, desktop, or 2-in-1 device.

If you reduce the friction value, the touch scrolling speed will be faster. If you increase the friction, it will scroll slower. To change this value, you need to apply a simple registry tweak. The change will be applied to your user account only. It won't affect other user accounts.

To change Touch Scrolling Friction in Windows 10, do the following.

  1. Open Registry Editor (Tip: see our detailed tutorial about Registry Editor).
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wisp\Touch

Tip: You can access any desired Registry key with one click.

If you do not have this key, then just create it.

  3. In the right pane of Registry Editor, you will see a value named Friction. If you do not have it, you can create it, it is a 32-bit DWORD value. Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value.
  4. Change its value data in decimals. The value can be in the range of 0 to 64. (See Note).
  5. To make the changes done by the Registry tweak take effect, you need to sign out and sign in to your user account. Alternatively, restart Windows 10.

Note: For the Friction 32-DWORD value, a value data of 0 means the instant scrolling with no friction (faster touch scrolling), while 64 stands for the highest amount of friction(slower touch scrolling). The default value of the Friction parameter is 32. Try to set different friction values and see which touch scrolling speed works best for you.
