Windows 11 Build 27764 (Canary) adds jump lists to the Start menu

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27764 is now available in the Canary Channel. It is notable for addition of jump list to pinned apps in the Start menu, Narrator improvements, and various fixes.

Changes and improvements

Start Menu

    • Now, when you right-click on apps pinned to the Start menu, the context menu will display Jump Lists if they exist for that app.

Dynamic Lighting

    • If compatible devices are not connected, the Dynamic Lighting page in Settings will display placeholder text and the brightness and effects controls will be disabled.
    • The Dynamic Lighting settings page now has direction options for the Wave effect - Forward, Backward, Outward, or Inward. The Gradient effect now has the option to select Forward.

Input

    • The IME toolbar will now be hidden when the app is in full-screen mode. This change will affect users who have the IME toolbar enabled, as well as those who type in Chinese or Japanese.

Narrator

    • Narrator Scan Mode has been improved. Skip past links (N’) allows you to navigate to the text after a link. This is most helpful when navigating through long emails, news articles, and wiki pages. Jump to lists (L’) allows you to quickly access a list on a web page or a document. To try these new features, you need to turn on Narrator first (Win key + Ctrl + Enter), then turn scan mode ON by pressing Caps Lock + Spacebar and finally use the new shortcuts – ‘N’ and ‘L’. Please note that scan mode is ‘ON’ by default on most web pages (like news articles, wiki page, etc.).

Speech in Windows

    • Improved speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. Narrator, Voice Access, Live Captions, Live Translation, and Voice Typing users may see a message asking them to manually update their language files. These language files will be available for download in the Microsoft Store.

Fixes

General

    • Fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders experiencing a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA GSOD while using their PC. The issue was introduced in Build 27754.

File Explorer

    • Made some changes to address an issue where File Explorer could freeze when viewing a folder with a large number of media files.

Taskbar and system tray

    • Fixed an issue where on secondary monitors the text for the Widgets button on the taskbar might overlap the date and time if the taskbar is left-aligned.

Input

    • Fixed an issue where the mouse cursor could become invisible and have a black rectangle behind it if the mouse trail feature was enabled.

Task Manager

    • Fixed an issue where some hard drives were incorrectly marked as SSD in the Performance section.

Display

    • Fixed an issue where secondary displays may experience lag and tearing when a window is in full screen mode.

Other

    • Fixed an issue where Excel would sometimes freeze on startup when opening certain files.

Known issues

General

    • [Important note for Copilot+ devices] If you are upgrading to the Canary channel from the Dev, Release Preview, or Stable channels on a Copilot+ device, you will encounter an issue using your PIN or biometrics when attempting to sign in. You will see the error "Something went wrong, your PIN is not available" with the code 0xd0000225. To reset your PIN, click the "Set up PIN" button.
    • Investigating reports that some Insiders are still experiencing a rollback to a previous build with error code 0xc190010 when attempting to update to the latest Canary build.
    • Engineers are investigating reports that window borders painted in an accent color do not appear when the feature is enabled. Additionally, shadows do not appear, and window opening animations (and other animations) play even if animations are disabled in the system settings.
