Microsoft has released a fix for Windows 10 version 1909, and its Server counterpart. A known issue affects devices with Wi-Fi connections using WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3) which have installed KB4598298, released on January 21, 2021 or KB4601315, released on February 9, 2021.

The out-of-band update KB5001028 resolves the following issue.

You might receive stop error 0x7E in nwifi.sys with a blue screen when you attempt to use a Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) connection. You are more likely to encounter this issue when reconnecting to a Wi-Fi network after disconnecting, or when waking from sleep or hibernation. Note Most Wi-Fi networks are currently using WPA2 and are not affected.

If you have automatic updates enabled, you will receive KB5001028 automatically and do not need to take any further action. It is a cumulative update, so you do not need to apply any previous update before installing it. The update is available on all release channels including Windows Update, Microsoft Update Catalog and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Microsoft has also listed a number of workarounds. For example, you can connect your device to a Wi-Fi network with WPA2 instead of WPA3, or upgrade Windows 10, version 1909, to a newer version 2004 release. You can also use a wired connection as a last resort.

  1. PLEASE BE AWARE OF INSTALLING THIS UPDATE. It installs automatically. After restart I was not able to update the system. Just go to Windows Update and click the button. The way it behaves it is really strange. No message related to last check, button disappears, no animations. Removing this update from the system Windows Update button came back to normal, but once I press it wants to download this piece of garbage. Microsoft once again released a patch without solid testing.

  2. I experienced a similar problem, I can see the “check for updates” button, but nothing else, I can’t see the messages above it, the graphics, loading animation, etc… it looks like the button does nothing but it does, I just can’t see it… just like written in this post :

when I try to uninstall KB5001028 , there is no Uninstall button available,or the right-mouse click option to choose “uninstall”, not like other update packages.
kb4601395 – the SSU update that comes with it, can’t be uninstalled as well.
Is it possible to remove it with a command in the CMD/Powershell?

    I am using Win10 x64 , version 1909.
before the last update, I was on build 18363.1316

I would like to remove KB5001028, and to get instead the cumulative update before it on the list , KB4601315

    Is that possible or recommended?
    Thank you..

      1. Yes, thank you for the syntax, I used the wusa command you’ve mentioned, I’ve got an error message of Installer encountered an error 0x800f0905

On the uninstall updates window, I get a message: An error has occurred. Not all the updates were successfully uninstalled.

        Already tried the following commands:

        DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
        DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
        sfc/ Scannow
        all of them completed successfully.

  3. I’m on 1909, after installing the update my wifi don’t connect to internett – had to remove it again.
