Windows 10 build 10547 features some Start menu changes

Taskbar2

The recently released Windows 10 build 10547 includes a number of changes that you might not have noticed. Today, I would like to turn your attention to the Start menu changes I spotted while playing with that build. The Start menu is the feature which gets the most attention and scrutiny by users who were disappointed with Windows 8's UI. Let's see what they have changed.

The first change I spotted is a modified context menu. If you right click the File Explorer item, in Windows 10 RTM, it shows the same context menu as the This PC folder. Almost all its items are present there. However, in Windows 10 build 10547, Microsoft changed this. Now, the File Explorer right click menu inside the Start menu comes with only two items: Pin to Start and More. All the rest of the items have been moved, unnecessarily, in my opinion, into a "More" submenu:

The context menu for Windows apps has also been updated. When you right click some Universal app like Photos, you will also see a new "More" submenu. There it is possible to access the following items: "Turn live tile off", "Unpin for taskbar", "Rate and review" and "Share":

And, finally, in Windows 10 build 10547, the number of tiles in the Start menu has been increased from 512 to 2048. the amount of apps in the Start menu increased from 512 to 2048. So, when you open the App List, everything in there is counted. If you have like 40 programs, you could have 300 “apps” or items because it includes folders and subfolders. Thanks to our reader Jose_49 for this info.

Well, that's all that's changed in the Start menu for this build. Let me know if you found any more interesting change which I forgot to mention in this article.

  1. Hi Sergey. Just a little note: The amount of apps which increase from 512 to 2048 is not from apps pinned, but in total apps.

I mean, when you open the App List, everything in there is counted. So, if you have like 40 programs, you could have 300 “apps” or items because it includes folders and subfolders.

  2. hi,
Any chance to change the black/dark grey color of the contextual menus with a more apropiate color? (let’s say similar with the taskbar color)
