How to View Telegram Message without Notifying the Sender

When you read a message on Telegram, keep in mind that the sender will be notified. However, if you need to keep in private that you read the message, there are a few ways to do so. One method is to turn off the internet after receiving a notification and then open the chat to read the message without alerting the sender.

Telegram Messenger, commonly referred to as Telegram, is a popular modern chat app. It claims encryption of messages, cross-platform software, and cloud-based sync and features as its strong points. It was first introduced on August 14, 2013, for iOS, and later for Android in October of the same year. Users can communicate through messages, share various types of media, and make private or group voice and video calls, as well as public livestreams. The service exists on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and in most web browsers.

View Telegram Message without Notifying Sender From Offline

To view a a Telegram Message secretly from the Sender, do the following.

  1. Open Telegram setting, and enable Autoload Media for the types of content you want to load automatically in addition to the text. It will be of help when you go offline.
  2. Once received a message, open the notification drawer on the phone, and tap on the Internet icon, and turn it off. Alternatively, tap the Airplane icon, so the phone will go offline.
  3. View the message. The sender will not instantly learn that you have already read it. The same applies to the Airplane mode.

The offline mode works not only on Android, but on Windows and Linux too, where you can similarly disconnect the internet connection to hide your presence when reading.

Read Telegram Message Secretly using  Preview Feature

The mobile version of Telegram comes with a preview feature that is often overlooked by users. It opens a floating preview of messages on the screen.

To read Telegram messages anonymously without sender notification, do the following.

  1. On your smartphone, simply open the Telegram app,
  2. Locate the desired chat in the list, and long press on the sender's profile picture.
  3. A chat preview will appear without opening the chat. The great thing is that it supports scrolling.

In less than a second, a preview area will appear containing all the messages in the chat, which you can scroll up and down. This way you can read any telegram chat privately so the sender won't know that you have read it.

This method only works in Telegram for mobile. The desktop version of the desktop client doesn't have anything like that, but you can always disable the Internet to hide your presence.

View Messages from the Notification Drawer

This method only works when you have received a short reply from one person.

  1. Swipe down to open notifications.
  2. Find the Telegram section, and expand the notifications using the down arrow chevron.
  3. Find the sender, and expand its message using the same button. This won't open the app, but will show you the message contents. You will view the Telegram message without notifying the sender.

The only disadvantage here is that the notifications allow viewing part of  a message. It only shows you first 500 characters. If you need to read the whole long message, it is better to use the preview feature.

Obviously, this method only works on the mobile version of Telegram.

That's it!
