Thunderbird 78.10.2 comes with resolved security issues and fixed bugs

The Thunderbird email app received a new stable version 78.10.2. It comes with bug fixes, and also includes patches for a number of security issues with low severity. There are also a few usability improvements.

Thunderbird is my preferred email client of choice. I use this app on every PC and on every operating system I use. It is stable, contains all the features you need, supports add-ons and also comes with a useful RSS reader. I am using Thunderbird for many years and never felt the need to look for an alternative.

Thunderbird 78 doesn't support classic XUL add-ons any longer, but includes some of their features out-of-the-box. For example, on Windows you can minimize the app to the system tray.

Security fixes

• CVE-2021-29957 (LOW): Partial protection of inline OpenPGP message not indicated
  If a MIME encoded email contains an OpenPGP inline signed or encrypted message part, but also contains an additional unprotected part, Thunderbird did not indicate that only parts of the message are protected.
• CVE-2021-29956 (LOW): Thunderbird stored OpenPGP secret keys without master password protection
  OpenPGP secret keys that were imported using Thunderbird version 78.8.1 up to version 78.10.1 were stored unencrypted on the user's local disk. The master password protection was inactive for those keys. Version 78.10.2 will restore the protection mechanism for newly imported keys, and will automatically protect keys that had been imported using affected Thunderbird versions.

Other fixes in this release resolve a number of bugs found in previous app versions, and applicable to the address book, add-on manager, calendar, and the user interface of the app.

New features

• Added support for importing OpenPGP keys without a primary secret key
• Add-ons manager displays a preferences icon for mail extensions that include an options page

Fixes

• OpenPGP messages with a high compression ratio (over 10x) could not be decrypted
• Selected OpenPGP key was lost after opening the Key Properties dialog in Account Settings
• Parsing some OpenPGP user IDs failed
• Various improvements to OpenPGP partial encryption reminders
• Troubleshooting information page did not display row labels on macOS
• Mail toolbar buttons were too big when displaying both icons and text

Finally, the release notes do not highlight known issues.

Download Thunderbird

Thunderbird users should eventually get the update automatically via the built-in update mechanism. To update it manually, select menu > Help > About Thunderbird to open the "About" dialog and initiate the update check. After that, the app should download and install the most recent version available.
