December 2021 firmware update for Surface Laptop 4 focuses on two things: fixing bugs that cause blue screen of death and improving the battery life by enabling Windows 11-specific “features.” While the first change leaves no questions, the second one remains a bit puzzling. Microsoft has been steadily adding a mysterious Windows 11 feature that somehow improves battery life. Whatever that feature is, Surface owners will be happy to see their computers working a bit better and longer.

December 2021 firmware update is available for Surface Laptop 4 models with Intel CPUs and Windows 10 20H2 or newer. AMD-based Laptop 4 did not get this update.

Surface Studio 2 received an extensive list of new drivers in December 2021 firmware update. These drivers address critical networking security vulnerabilities and improve the camera and overall stability.

December 2021 update is available for all Surface Studio 2 configurations with Windows 10 1903 or newer. Microsoft reports no known issues in the new firmware for Surface Studio 2 and Laptop 4, but you need to keep in mind that you cannot roll back firmware updates on Surface devices.
In case you missed it, Microsoft recently stopped supporting the original Surface Studio and several other Surface computers released between 2015 and 2017. End of support means Microsoft no longer provides firmware updates, although Windows 10 and Windows 11 will continue getting security and feature updates for years to come.
