During the Surface event, Microsoft introduced Copilot+, a new set of AI-powered features and capabilities exclusively for Windows 11. These features will be available on new PCs launching under the Copilot+ brand this summer, marking "a new era for Windows PCs."
To be designated as Copilot+, a device must be equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with at least 45 TOPS performance. Currently, only the latest Snapdragon X processors from Qualcomm meet this requirement, meaning that initial Copilot+ PC devices will run Windows on ARM. However, Copilot+ devices with Intel and AMD chips are expected to be released later in the year.
The first Copilot+ devices are set to be released in June, with devices like the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 powered by Snapdragon X processors leading the way. Additional AI-based features are expected to be added later in the year.
Some of the exclusive features available on Copilot+ PC
- Recall. Works in the background, remembers all the information on the screen and user actions, and also allows you to search for data using natural language queries.
- Copilot that takes into account context. Recall understands what's currently on the screen and suggests useful actions based on that information.
- Translation of subtitles. Windows will be able to translate subtitles into English in real time from more than 40 languages without the need to connect to the cloud.
- Auto Super Resolution. Windows will be able to automatically improve the quality of images and videos, making them clearer and more detailed.
- Improved image and text generation with Cocreator. Now Copilot can generate images and text without accessing a cloud service, which significantly speeds up the completion of some tasks.
- Improved Windows Studio effects. Now the operating system will be able to virtually improve lighting conditions and apply artistic styles to video recordings.
The standout feature of Windows 11, Recall, runs in the background, remembering everything seen or done on the computer. Users can search for information using natural language queries, and Microsoft ensures that Recall operates locally for enhanced privacy. It is formerly known as AI Explorer
Additionally, Windows 11 includes a timeline interface similar to the Timeline feature in Windows 10, which displays on-demand activity snapshots taken by Windows. For instance, searching for a specific topic like "dinosaurs" will bring up all instances where dinosaur-related content appeared on the screen.
Microsoft assures users that Recall operates solely on the local device, ensuring a high level of privacy. Users have the option to pause, disable, delete recorded content, or restrict the capture of specific applications or websites.
