Microsoft Terminates PWA for Insider Program

Project Catnip

Microsoft was working on a special 'Windows Insider app', known as 'Project Catnip'. It was expected to be a Progressive Web App (PWA), and could provide all the information related to Microsoft's Insider program. After a year and a half of development, Microsoft has cancelled the app without releasing a single public version.

The announcement for Windows 10 Build 19551 includes a small note:

Halting Project Catnip
We’re no longer planning to do external testing or a public release of our “Project Catnip PWA” for the Windows Insider Program. Due to some technical limitations, we were not going to be able to offer the experiences we wanted to for Insiders through the PWA. We’re still looking at solutions for some of the features we investigated in the PWA. Thank you as always for your enthusiasm.

The change is definitely upsetting. Using a standalone app, you could use ANY device with an Internet connection to access the Insider program information and news. You could do this even without a PC with Windows 10 Insider Preview installed, since PWAs run smoothly on plenty of Android smartphones, Tablets, and in Chrome on Linux.

Microsoft is no longer planning to publicly release the app. Also the company didn't mention if we will see any its features released to the Insider web site or/and Feedback Hub.
