Microsoft Renames Visual Studio Online to ‘Codespaces’, Lowers Prices

Microsoft has renamed their Visual Studio Online to Codespaces, citing their wish to position the software as more that just 'an editor in the browser', as the reason.

The announcement was made on April 30, and the change will begin appearing for users 'in the coming weeks and months'.

Now, the service is using a new tagline:

Codespaces "are simply the most productive place to code."

Visual Studio Online was first introduced in November 2019 as a companion to 'mature' projects like Visual Studio, and the Visual Studio Code editor app. Visual Studio Online could be useful for quickly coding something right in the browser, and, according to the company, could be helpful with long-term development, too.

After this rebranding, Microsoft drops prices for Codespaces on May 19.

  • Basic instances will be available for .08 per hour (previously for 0.24).
  • For Standard (4 cores, 8 GB of RAM) Linux instance type the price drop is from approximately .45 per hour today to .17 per hour as of mid-March.
  • Premium (8 cores, 16 GB of RAM) will go from .87 to .34.

Codespaces also incur a storage charge of .0088 an hour for a 64 GB SSD, which can be billed down to the second.
