Microsoft releases new AI features in Paint and Notepad to Insiders

Dev and Canary channel Insiders are now getting updated Paint and Notepad with a number of AI features. In Paint, users will find Generative fill, Generative erase, and improved Cocreator and Image creator features. Notepad will allow using an AI-powered text rewrite option.

Paint version 11.2410.28.0

Generative Fill

This update introduces "Generative Fill," an advanced AI tool developed to enhance artistic workflows by making them more intuitive and engaging. Generative Fill allows users to modify and expand their artwork through brief textual descriptions, all while maintaining the integrity of the project's existing stylistic elements.

This feature is designed to serve both experienced artists seeking to incorporate intricate details and hobbyists exploring new creative possibilities. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Generative Fill aids users in refining their digital artwork, enabling them to realize their artistic vision while retaining full control over the final result.

To utilize this functionality, users first select a rectangular or free-form area within their artwork using the Selection tool. A contextual menu then appears, offering the Generative Fill option. Users can then input a textual description of the desired addition and initiate the generation process.

If the generated output is unsatisfactory, users can simply request a new iteration. Refining the selection or adjusting the textual prompt may also yield improved results.

Generated options can be cycled through using arrow buttons, and once a satisfactory result is achieved, it can be applied to the main canvas using the "Keep" button.

Generative fill will initially be available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. To use generative fill, you will need to sign in with your Microsoft account. This feature is only available for Windows Insiders in supported markets, where availability may vary based on regional criteria.

Generative erase

This option allows removing unwanted objects from your images.

To activate the Generative Erase function, select it from the left-hand panel while using the eraser tool. This specialized brush enables precise manual selection of content for removal by brushing over the desired areas.

Users may refine their selection using the "Add Area to Erase" and "Reduce Area to Erase" options. Once the selection is finalized, clicking "Apply" will permanently remove the specified content from the canvas.

Alternatively, rectangular or free-form selection tools can be used in conjunction with the Generative Erase command, which can be accessed through the context menu associated with the selection or by right-clicking.

Generative erase is available to users on all Windows 11 PCs.

Cocreator

Cocreator, a feature designed for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, has undergone model enhancements that result in faster processing speeds and improved output quality. Additionally, integrated moderation protocols ensure a secure and reliable user experience.

Image Creator

Image Creator, initially introduced as a preview feature within the Paint application last year, is now broadening its accessibility. Users with Windows 11 operating systems in the United States, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany can now access the preview version. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, along with Copilot Pro subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, will gain access to Image Creator utilizing AI credits.

Notepad version 11.2410.15.0

Notepad now incorporates generative AI capabilities, allowing users to refine their written content with ease. The Rewrite text feature will be of help here.

Users can rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify the length of their text to meet specific requirements. This functionality is accessible via right-clicking on selected text, using the menu bar, or through the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + I).

Upon activation, Notepad generates three alternative versions of the selected text. Users can choose one of these options or further refine the rewrite settings to request additional variations.

Options to adjust length, tone, and format offer users flexibility in tailoring their content for various purposes. Previous versions of the text are retained, enabling users to revert to earlier drafts if desired. The rewrite feature can also be disabled through the application settings.

In addition to these AI-powered writing enhancements, this update significantly improves Notepad's launch performance. Most users will experience a reduction in launch time of over 35%, with some seeing improvements of more than 55%.
