Microsoft appears to be working on a lightweight Outlook version for Android

Microsoft is reportedly working on a "lite" version of the Outlook app for Android. The lite version could eventually replace the current Outlook for Android client. However, it seems much more logical for Microsoft to have both applications simultaneously.

It is worth noting that a light version of the Outlook client for Android already exists for some time. But for some reason it is only available in a few countries. Maybe this new Outlook Lite app will reach a wider audience. At least a Microsoft 365 roadmap item suggests that. Outlook Lite for Android is slated for release in July 2022, but the timing is still subject to change.

"An Android app that brings the main benefits of Outlook in a smaller app size with fast performance for low-end devices on any network," the roadmap says.

So, Microsoft plans to make it run fast even on affordable devices. The German website Dr. Windows managed to get their hands on the new app, and they confirm that it is fast and fluid. It runs much faster than the regular Outlook for Android app. It is also flexible when it comes to settings and preferences.

It currently includes most of the features from the regular Outlook client. The only stripped down thing is account management. You can only configure one account, and it supports only one type of account, i.e. it must be a personal/consumer Microsoft Account.

The new app may be part of the "One Outlook" idea, on which Microsoft is actively working to create an Outlook app identical on all supported platforms. On Windows, the redesigned software is already available for testing.
