How to Restore View Image Info Option in Firefox

Menu Context Menu Icon

Here is how to restore the missing View Image Info menu option in Firefox. This entry has been removed in Firefox 88, and no longer part of the new Proton UI. It was opening the Page Info dialog  directly to the Media tab, which many find convenient.

If you right-click an image in Mozilla Firefox, you will find out that the View Image Info entry is no longer available.

Luckily, there is an about:config option which restores the option for images. Additionally, we will review a couple of methods that you can use to retrieve the picture information with a couple of clicks. Finally, there is an extension you can use.

To restore the View Image Info option in the Firefox right-click menu, you need to do the following.

Restore View Image Info Option in Firefox

  1. Launch the Firefox browser.
  2. Type about:config into the address bar and hit the Enter key.
  3. Click the Accept the risk and continue button on the Proceed with Caution page.
  4. Type or copy & paste browser.menu.showViewImageInfo into the search box.
  5. Set the browser.menu.showViewImageInfo option to true.

You are done! Now, right-click on any image on a web site. You now have the View Image Info entry in the image context menu!

Alternatively, you can use the Page Info dialog of Firefox and its Media tab. The tab lists all the pictures on the target page, and has a preview thumbnail which can be used to find the required image. It is less convenient, but can be used out of the box without changing the browser settings.

View Image Information in Page Info dialog

  1. While on a web page, press Ctrl + I.
  2. In the Page Info dialog, click on the Media tab.
  3. Find the image in the list you want to view information for.

The dialog shows resolution and URL address for images, along with other technical details. Also, you can save one or several images using the "Save as" button available on the Media tab.

Besides the keyboard shortcut, you can open the page info dialog using the site icon in the address bar. Here is how it can be done.

Open Page Info using the site icon in the address bar

  1. Click on the site icon in the Firefox address bar.
  2. In the popup, click the 'Connection secure' item.
  3. Select 'More information'.
  4. This will open the 'Page info' dialog.

Finally, you can install a special add-on that not only adds the missing View Image Info entry to the image right-click menu but also extends it by bringing extra options like image converter.

The "View Image Info Reborn" Firefox Add-on

View Image Info Reborn

The extensions comes with an options page that allows the user to perform a variety of actions. The actions are as follows.

  • View the image in the current tab.
  • Show image information in a new window.
  • Display image information in a new tab.
  • View image information in the overlay.
  • Save WEBP images as PNG or JPG.

The above mentioned options can be displayed directly in the image context menu, or can be hidden.

When the submenu is hidden, you can access the extra actions by using shortcut keys. E.g. by default it opens the picture details in a new window, but if you click 'View Image Info' while holding the Ctrl key, it will display image information in a new tab. The Shift key opens it in an overlay window.

You can configure these options on demand from the about:addons page of the browser.

  1. In Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + A, or type about:addons in the address bar.
  2. Click on the View Image Info Reborn in the list.
  3. Click on the Preferences tab.
  4. Change the menu style, shortcut keys, and view options for what you want.

You are done.

Add-on safety and permissions

This extension has a "Caution label" on the Mozilla Add-ons website. It reads that the add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla. Make sure you trust it before installing.

Another reason for concern is add-on permissions. It is set to ask to access every page and its contents. The author briefly explained that permissions are required to work with images stored on domains other than the original web page, e.g. on a CDN. Also, this is needed to access Type and Last-Modified details for images, as well as for implementing the Save as... options.

That's all about the topic.
