Here’s how to improve gaming performance on Windows 11

Microsoft has issued official recommendations that may help you improve performance of games in Windows 11. According to the company, disabling some virtualization features have positive impact on gaming experience. There are a few more additional tips in this direction.

Microsoft noted that Virtual Machine Platform and Memory integrity (part of Core isolation) are the two features that may slow down games. The Memory Integrity feature is responsible for controlling the installation of drivers. It verifies that the drivers are provided by a trusted party and do not contain malicious code. The Virtual Machine Platform feature is required by virtual machines, WSL and integrated Android platform. Both are enabled by default in Windows 11.

What Microsoft recommends is to disable Virtual Machine Platform and Memory integrity before starting a game, and re-enable both after you finish the game session. Microsoft insists on keeping them both enabled for a security reason.

Here's how to disable these features.

Improve game performance on Windows 11

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, and type optionalfeatures.exe.run optionalfeatures.exe
  2. In the Windows Features dialog, scroll down to the Virtual Machine Platform entry.
  3. Clear the check box next to it.Windows 11 Optimize Game Performance - disable Virtual Machine Platform
  4. Now, open the Search (Win + S) and type "Core Isolation".Type Core Isolation
  5. Select Windows Security in the list of search results. It will take you directly to the Core Isolation page.
  6. There, turn off the Memory Integrity toggle option.Disable memory integrity option
  7. Now, restart Windows 11.

You are done.

Indeed the above scenario is not very convenient, as you have to restart the computer every time you change the configuration options. Sadly, Microsoft didn't provide any alternative solution. There is a high chance that hardcore gamers will keep both options off.

It is also worth mentioning that Microsoft didn't name a specific Windows 11 version that is affected by this issue. Looks like both its stable versions, which are 21H2 and the newest 22H2 are affected. The latter is suffering from several bugs that may prevent you from upgrading your device, or negatively affect your daily workflow. 1. Trying to install Windows 7 games for Windows 11 under: Windows 11, version 22H2. I am getting an error on the install that says:
Error opening file for writing :
    C:\Windows\system32\en-US\cmncliM.dll.mui

I checked the windows directory and this file does not exist on my system.

    Thanks.
