Google Chrome's latest performance tool has become available in the stable channel. The browser can now show Performance Issue Alerts for heavy web pages, and optimize them with one click in order to make them consume less system resources.
Chrome can now detect the amount of CPU and memory a tab consumes. It monitors even background tabs and determines if they are consuming too many resources. Then it prompts you to close such tabs. The notification sits behind the toolbar button, and it only appears when the tabs cross the CPU usage threshold set by the developers.
Notifications about heavy resource usage will appear in the upper right corner of the Google Chrome window, or when you click the toolbar button. You will see a list of problematic tabs and two buttons, Dismiss and Fix now. By clicking the "Fix now" button you will unload problematic tabs from memory.
If you aren't happy with the new feature, it is easy to disable it by opening chrome settings > Performance > General and turning off the Performance issue alerts option.
Besides the alerts, Google has also improved the memory saver feature. In Chrome 130 and above, Memory Saver can now operate it three modes, Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum.
Here is how they work.
- Moderate: The browser optimizes the work of the tabs itself.
- Balanced: it is guided by viewing habits so it will keep alive the tabs important for you.
- Maximum: The tabs are immediately disabled when the user exits them.
You can specify the desired mode in Chrome settings > Performance > Memory Saver.
