Edge 90 Beta: Resizable vertical tabs, Adaptive Notification Requests, and new UI elements

Microsoft inches closer to the release of Edge 90 in the Stable channel. The next major update for the browser is now available in the Beta channel, which is the last testing phase before the global rollout. Edge 90 Beta contains all the new features, improvements, and fixes previously available in the Dev channel (Dev now offers Edge 91.) Here are the most notable changes you will see once Edge 90 become available.

What's new in Microsoft Edge 90 Beta

  • Kids Mode. With Kids Mode, Microsoft wants to provide parents and caregivers with a safe web environment for children. Kids Mode uses Bing search by default with additional age filters. Besides, there is an option to limit which websites a child can access and tailor available content to different age groups. You can learn more about Kids Mode in Microsoft Edge here.
  • Adaptive Notification Requests. This is a new system that makes sure your browser does not block useful notifications on websites. It uses data from millions of Edge users to determine whether the browser should stop notifications by default without bothering or prompt you to decide.
  • Resizable vertical tabs. The ability to resize the vertical tabs pane is yet another new feature in the Beta channel. Earlier, the vertical tab sidebar had a fixed width, making it a bit harder to read long tab headers. Now, you can resize this bar according to your needs.

But that's not all. There are many minor improvements, such as refinements to Collections, new tools for a PDF viewer, new UI elements and flyouts, and many more. Microsoft plans to push Edge 90 to the Stable channel in the week of April 15, 2021. Currently, the company releases major stable updates every six weeks, but this tradition is about to change. Microsoft recently announced its plans to follow new Chromium release schedule changes and move Edge to a four-week cadence.

Microsoft also reminded users that the company is no longer supporting Edge Legacy; it is time to move on and switch to Edge Chromium. Edge Legacy received its last update on March 9, when Microsoft released the latest cumulative updates. In April, Patch Tuesday updates will permanently remove Edge Legacy from the most recent Windows 10 versions.
