Starting in Opera 54, the browser features news on the Speed Dial page. If you are not happy with this change, here is how to hide them and restore the classic look of the New Tab page.
The Speed Dial page appears on the screen when you start the browser or open a new tab. It contains a number of thumbnails of frequently visited web sites. The user can customize it by removing thumbnails, pinning them to the top, or adding custom URLs. Speed Dial saves your time, allowing you to go to the desired web site quickly. Speed Dial was first implemented in classic versions of Opera, and it is still available in modern Chromium-based versions of the browser.
Starting in Opera 54, the updated Speed Dial page includes news along with the ability to add your own feeds. Fifty news articles will be shown below your regular Speed Dial folders. You can customize the news language and their categories. Categories include arts, business, entertainment, food, health, lifestyle, living, motoring, news, science, sports, technology and travel. More than 40 country and language sources are available, and you can also select more than one to receive a variety of news content.
While the News feature is useful, there are users who find no use for this new section on the Speed Dial page. They prefer the good old look of the page with web site thumbnails only. Luckily, it is easy to disable the News section on the Speed Dial page in Opera. Here is how.
To disable News on Speed Dial in Opera, do the following.
- Open a new tab.
- Click on the 'Easy setup' icon at the top right corner of Speed Dial.
- In the Easy setup flyout, Go down to the Appearance section.
- Disable the option 'Show news'.
The News section will be removed instantly. This will restore the classic look of the Speed Dial page.
