Change Default Console Window Position in Windows 10

A console in Windows 10 is the shell environment where you can run text-based console tools and utilities by typing commands. Its UI is very simple and does not have any buttons or graphical commands. Examples of the console are WSL, PowerShell, and the classic Command Prompt. The console can be configured to remember its previous screen position, or you can make it appear in its default position.

Windows Console subsystem is utilized by certain built-in apps of Windows 10, including the Command PromptPowerShell, and WSL. In Windows 10 Build 18298, which represents the upcoming 19H1 feature update, also known as version 1903, you will find a set of new options of the console. Using them, you can change the foreground and background terminal colors of a console window, and more.

Also, it is possible to to customize the default window position a console window for your user account. It will be set for the specific shortcut you used to open a console instance. E.g. if you have multiple command prompt shortcuts, you can change the default console window position for each of them individually. This way, PowerShell, WSL, and the command prompt may have their own independent settings.

To change the default console window position in Windows 10, do the following.

  1. Open the required command prompt window, elevated command promptPowerShell, or WSL you want to apply a custom window position to.
  2. Move the console window to the desired location on the screen.
  3. Right-click on the title bar of its window and select Properties from the context menu.
  4. Switch to the Layout tab.
  5. Under Window position, turn off the option Let system position windows box, and click OK.
  6. Close the Properties dialog.
  7. Close the console window.

You are done. This will make the console start at the current location next time you open it.

To make the console window remember its position,

  1. Open the required command prompt window, elevated command promptPowerShell, or WSL you want to restore the default behavior for.
  2. Right-click on the title bar of its window and select Properties from the context menu.
  3. Switch to the Layout tab.
  4. Under Window position, turn off the option Let system position windows box, and click OK.
  5. Close the Properties dialog.

That's it.

Tip: In Windows 10 version 1903, there are a number of changes were made to the built-in console subsystem of the operating system.
