Windows 10X [probably] is a new edition for foldable devices

The name of the Windows 10 edition running on Microsoft's most recent hardware, the rumored dual-screen Surface device, was accidentally revealed on Twitter. Previously rumored to be named 'Windows Lite', it might have its own marketing name of Windows 10X.

There were rumors that Microsoft is working on a new Windows 10 version, which is lightweight and specially tweaked for low-end devices, and supports various device form factors. Recently, a reference to Windows Lite was found in the new Action Center UI of Windows 10, suggesting that it is the name of the new Windows 10 branch. However, this information has never been confirmed by Microsoft.

The new information comes from Twitter user Evan Blass who was also revealed that this OS is also for folding screen devices, and that desktop applications in this new OS run in Windows Containers. According to him, the dual-screen Surface device is powered by Windows 10X, so it might be the marketing name for 'Windows Lite'.

Unfortunately, there is not much information about this new OS. It is also not yet known whether it will remain exclusive to low-power Surface devices, similarly to Surface RT with Windows RT in the Windows 8 era, or whether it will be available for a wider range of models.

The dual screen Surface, known by the code name Centaurus, appears to be the first device running this new edition of Windows 10.

We expect Microsoft to share more details about the new OS as soon as the Surface dual-screen device is announced.

  1. Windows 10 X. More like Windows 10 Aaaaasssss.

Can’t wait for this to flop dead, just like its previous incarnation as “Windows RT”. Microsoft are terrible at UI design, they can’t even make their flagship desktop operating system function on a desktop, and their attempts to adapt it for touch screens have been laughable too. User experience in Windows 10 is literally decades behind Android and iOS on mobile, and even Microsoft’s own Windows 7 on desktops/laptops.

Let’s “continue cancelling” and show these aging hipsters that’s not how UIs are supposed to work.
