The transition from Windows Insider Rings to Channels is done

The change Microsoft has recently announced for the Insider Program is now live. The company has renamed the Insider Rings to Channels, and has automatically converted the appropriate options to new values in Windows 10 Settings.

The Fast ring has become the Dev Channel, the Slow ring has become the Beta Channel, and the Release Preview ring has become the Release Preview Channel. The new naming scheme reminds of what Microsoft is using for the Edge browser.

Here is how it now looks in Settings:

The following scheme describes the changes which have been done to the Insider program.

  • Insiders in the Dev Channel will receive builds that is earliest in a development cycle and will contain the latest work-in-progress code from our engineers. These builds are not matched to a specific Windows 10 release.
  • The Beta Channel is Ideal for early adopters. Insiders and IT Professionals in the Beta Channel can check out upcoming Windows 10 features, while still getting relatively reliable updates that are validated by Microsoft. These builds will be tied to a specific upcoming release.
  • Insiders and IT Professionals in the Release Preview Channel will have access to the upcoming release of Windows 10 prior to it being released to the world, with advanced quality updates and certain key features. These builds are supported by Microsoft.

The new names now reflect the stability and purpose of pre-release builds, rather than being named after the build release cadence. Nothing else is changed, the way the Insider program works remains the same.
