StatCounter: Microsoft Edge surpasses Firefox in popularity

Analyst firm StatCounter released data on the popularity of desktop web browsers as of March 2021, according to which Microsoft Edge had a market share of 8.04%. By comparison, in March 2020, the browser only had 0.57% of the market, so the growth rate is really impressive.

It's also worth noting that Microsoft Edge is now the third most popular desktop web browser, surpassing Firefox, which has a share of 7.97%. The second place in the market is still occupied by Safari with a share of 10.13%. If Edge continues to strengthen its position at the same rate, it will soon be able to surpass Safari.

Microsoft Edge Surpasses Firefox In Popularity

Statcounter data combines laptops with desktop devices. This reveals how actually popular is the Edge browser now. As of March 2021, Safari controls just over 10% of the total market share, so Edge is in the 2% range and could overtake the former over the next few months at current growth rates. Google Chrome's 67% market share is still a long way off.

Google Chrome remains the leader, and the situation is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. At the moment, the share of Chrome is 67.09%.

Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices in Edge Stable 80. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which is already reached its end of support. Also, interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks.

  1. Not surprising really as Microsoft install the browser by default in any case!

But how many users actually use the edge browser on a daily basis? Now that would be interesting to know the stats on that

    1. I’m currently use the Chromium-based Edge as my daily web browser. Chrome needs to go a diet of eating RAM now since Microsoft has entered to the Google Chromium project.
