Fix: Remove arrows from system tray in Windows 10 build 14271

As Microsoft officially cautioned, the recently released Windows 10 build 14271 has issues with the system tray. According to the release notes, when you enable "always show all icons in the notification area", this setting disrupts the layout of the notification area. Users who installed this build also faced a number of other issues with the system tray. For some reason, the tray shows additional arrows mixed with tray icons. Here is how to fix the issue.

This is how the problem looks like:Windows 10 build 14271 messed up systray

It happens regardless of the state of the option "always show all icons in the notification area".

The solution is unexpected. To fix the bug and remove arrows from the system tray in Windows 10 build 14271, you need to do the following:

  1. Right click the empty space on the taskbar to open its context menu.
  2. Tick the item called "Show touch keyboard button". It should be enabled:Windows 10 remove arrows from tray in 14271

Once this is done, the additional arrow will disappear immediately. See the following video:

  1. Adding the touchpad only removes the arrows temporarily. As more notification gets added, the arrows come back. What a bummer!

  2. Sorry but it doesn’t work for me. Arrows are still there. In my hands it seems that there is a max number of icons that can be shown. Without the “fix” , for me the number was 4. With the “fix” the space allocated to icons has increased slightly – to 5 and a bit of the 6th, but not enough to accommodate the 8 or so that I prefer to see in the tray.

  3. Unfortunately the workaround works not always. It works at one virtual computer (virtualbox, windows 10 x64), and on other one (vmware, windows 10 x64) it doesn’t.

  4. Unfortunately, I too must add my voice to the, “It doesn’t work for me either.” statement. Is there a Registry value that might work?

  5. You shouldn’t advertise solutions which finally don’t work !!! First you should try it yourself !!!!!
It works only up to 6 icons, but if you have 7 or more icons, it’s the same problem as before !!!
I hope that you do a better job in the future … !!!

  6. Didn´t work for me ..
7 icons in taskbar the arrows are there…
removed 2 items … with 5 icons the arrows are gone…
run again 1 programm… 6 icons the arrows are back

  7. Not working. it seems to depend on the number of icons in the systray. If great than x, it will show additional arrows.

  8. This bug appears to be caused by having too many systray icons displayed and is dependant upon how much screen real estate you have. You can get rid of the arrow buttons by either expanding your entire taskbar one level up (click and drag the top edge of the taskbar) or turn off “Show all icons on the taskbar” and select only the ones you want until the arrow reappears. You’ll need to remove the last icon to get rid of the arrows, of course.

  9. The steps mentioned have some effect but there still was some little space left on the right side after applying, also the arrows didn’t go away.
The next thing I did was removing ALL notification icons and then turning them back on, this fixed the issue for me.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

  10. Removed all the icons and then added them 1 by 1. I can only get 4 icons to show properly. When the 5th is added the arrows show up! It’s hard to believe this wasn’t noticed prior to release. I know it’s pre-release stuff but wow!

  11. This is partially correct. When following these instructions it did not work for me. If you follow these steps first the instructions posted will work. Right click on the taskbar and choose properties> notification area> customize. Click on “turn system icons on or off”. Make sure “input indicator” is on. You can then proceed to right click on the taskbar and check show touch keyboard button. Make note that the arrows still appeared, but after playing with them for about 30 seconds they went away. Hope this helps!
