Opera 39 will save laptop battery life

The Opera browser is getting interesting new features with every release. Opera 37 brought a built-in ad blocker and VPN. Now, another new feature has landed into the development channel of the browser. Opera 39 will get a power saving mode, which is aimed at making your laptop battery last up to 50% longer compared to other browsers.

On Opera's blog, they claim that Opera is more efficient with power saving than other browsers. Tests performed on a Lenovo X250, with a Core i7-5600U CPU, 16 GB RAM and on a Dell XPS 13, running Windows 10 64-bit, on high-performance power plan gave the following results:opera-powersaver-info1

Once your laptop battery gets low, the browser will suggest the user to enable the Power Saver feature.

If the user agrees, the following changes will be performed to make the browser consume less power:

  • Reduced activity in background tabs
  • Waking CPU less often due to more optimal scheduling of JavaScript timers
  • Automatically pausing unused plug-ins
  • Reduced frame rate to 30 frames per second
  • Tuning video-playback parameters and forcing usage of hardware accelerated video codecs
  • Paused animations for browser themes

This new feature looks promising and makes the browser pretty unique. Between Chrome and various Chromium-based browsers, Opera has started looking more interesting than the competition.

You can get Opera Developer from the official Opera website. The developer version of the browser can be installed alongside Opera stable.
