Modern File Explorer is Updated with Fluent Design

Windows 10 File Explorer Icon

As you may already know from our previous article, Windows 10 comes with a new Universal File Explorer app. It is a modern app which might replace the classic File Explorer in the future. Recently, it got updates with the Fluent design bits applied to the UI.

UWP File Explorer 01
It is a touch-oriented app, with no Ribbon or toolbar or any shell extensions. It might be interesting for touch screen users. The operating system has no shortcut to launch it, so you need to create it yourself.

  1. Right click the Desktop and select New - Shortcut.
  2. In the shortcut target box, type or copy-paste the following command:
    explorer.exe shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App

  3. Type some useful name for your new shortcut and set the appropriate icon.
Now you can launch it and see the Fluent design applied to the app. Here are some screenshots.

The following video demonstrates the refined user interface of the UWP File Explorer app:

It is not clear when the app will be activated by default for all Windows 10 users. Currently, the classic File Explorer is the only app suggested for file management tasks in the OS.

    1. I hope that weren’t getting things thrown in two different places like with Control Panel and Settings app.

  1. Instead of a new usefull tab file manager like Directory Opus, Microsoft creates another stupid app with no function.

    Absolutely disappointed.

  2. This is just the File Explorer app used on Windows 10 Mobile. It’s probably never going to be intended for use on the desktop.
