Microsoft will ditch Silverlight in Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft is once again working on rebooting its mobile platform and putting more efforts than ever into building the next iteration of its Windows Mobile OS. While its still unclear how it's going to end up looking on the outside, on the inside Microsoft is working on bringing more consistency with the desktop version of Windows 10 with its composable shell project. Of course, bringing the Mobile version on par with the desktop one will require even more under-the-hood changes. One of them, according to recent reports, will be the dropping of Silverlight app support on the mobile platform completely.

The news about Silverlight apps being deprecated in the next Windows 10 Mobile version came from Microsoft enthusiast Gustave M. who shared a screenshot of one of the internal builds of Windows 10 Mobile. Now, when you try to launch any Silverlight-based app on your device, a popup window will appear telling you that Silverlight apps are no longer supported on this version of Windows.

While it's a pretty logical step considering Microsoft isn't offering any tools to create new Silverlight apps for quite some time already, some users are concerned about their favorite apps disappearing from the platform after the release of this new Windows 10 Mobile version. Some popular apps, like WhatsApp messenger, for example, are still using the same old Silverlight code inside even though they're being regularly updated even now. Removal of Silverlight app support means you will not be able to use such apps any longer.
