Microsoft has finally announced Windows 10 19H2, along with their plans related to the upcoming release. Windows 10 19H2 will be a minor update with a smaller set of enhancements focused primarily on select performance improvements, enterprise features, and quality enhancements.

Microsoft is going to ship Windows 10 19H2 as a cumulative update to Windows 10 users once its development is finished. It will be available to Windows 10 May 2019 Update users as a regular update package, just like the monthly cumulative updates that Microsoft issues for supported Windows 10 versions.

Microsoft has started releasing 19H2 builds to Insiders in the Slow ring with build 18362.10000. Microsoft performs controlled feature rollouts (CFRs) to gain better feedback on overall build quality, so certain new features won't appear for Slow ring Insiders running 19H2. This also means that certain features may be shipped disabled on Insiders PCs.

For Insiders, this means a few differences to how they will get 19H2:

  • Insiders will need to be in the Slow ring and on the May 2019 Update to receive 19H2 bits.
  • 19H2 will be delivered to Insiders in the Slow ring via servicing as a Cumulative Update and not full build updates.
  • Some Insiders may not see the new features right away as we perform controlled feature rollouts (CFRs) to gain better feedback on overall build quality.
  • Specific to CFRs, we may ship features in these updates turned off by default and turn them on independently of bits getting downloaded to Insiders’ PCs.

It is interesting that users of older versions of Windows 10 will Windows 10 19H2 as a regular feature update. The cumulative update method will be used for Windows 10 version 1903 users only.

Microsoft has also announced that 19H2 is expected to launch in September 2019. This update is more like a service pack for Windows 10 version 1903, delivering fixes and minor improvements to the OS. The set of new features and user interface changes are expected to come with Windows 10 20H1, which is scheduled for Spring 2020.
