Microsoft Adds 4K Themes for Windows 10 to the Microsoft Store

Starting with Windows 7, Microsoft invented a new theme format - themepack. It was created so all the theme resources would be packed inside a single file and sharing of such themes would be easy. In Windows 8, the file format was revised to deskthemepack, and supported specifying if the window color would be automatically set based on the dominant color of the desktop background. Windows 10 supports both themepack and deskthemepack formats. Starting in Windows 10, you can download and install themes from the Microsoft Store. The ability to install themes in Windows Store was demoed during the October 2016 Microsoft event.

Themes In Windows Store

Technically, these are still regular *.deskthemepack files. As you may know, Windows 7 was the first version of the operating system which got support for themes. Windows 7 used the "*.themepack" file extension. Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are using a new format, *.deskthemepack. The file contents of the deskthemepack file are identical to the themepack file, but the *.theme file format is slightly updated to include additional information and can't be directly installed in Windows 7.

Tip: See how to install a Windows 8/Windows 10 theme in Windows 7 using the Deskthemepack Installer freeware. Alternatively, you can just extract the contents of deskthemepack/themepack.

Today Microsoft added four new 4K themes for Windows 10.  The set includes the following themepacks:

Each theme include a 4K set of colorful images. Here are some screenshots:

  1. To call these themes is misleading. They alter nothing except the wallpaper and overall colour scheme. To my mind, a theme should allow the user to customise all elements of the desktop and its windows, much like Windowblinds used to do. However MS seem to have cut off the ability of Windowblinds to do much nowadays. Pity.
