How to enable Jump Lists in the Start menu in Windows 10 build 10041

The Jump lists feature was introduced in Windows 7 for the Start Menu and for the new taskbar. When you right click a pinned app on the taskbar or hover over an app's icon in the Start Menu which has an arrow, it will show you a set of tasks and recent documents. For example, if you have pinned your browser, it will show you tasks to open it in private browsing mode or open a new tab. In Windows 10, due to the new redesigned Start menu, jump lists were not available yet. However, in Windows 10 build 10041, which is the latest public build available as of this writing, Microsoft has reimplemented jump lists. Here is how you can enable them.

To enable Jump lists in the Start menu of Windows 10 build 10041, you need to do the following:

  1. Open Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the following Registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Tip: See how to jump to the desired Registry key with one click.

  3. Here you must create a new 32-bit DWORD value and name it EnableXamlJumpView.

Set it to 1 and close Registry Editor.
  4. Restart Windows 10.

You are done. Now pin File Explorer to the Start menu and check out its jump list.

It is much bigger than the one from Windows 7, as it is designed for touch users. Although mouse and keyboard users will not be happy with such large jump lists. I would like to see some option in Settings to reduce its height and adjust the spacing between the items. Maybe it could get reduced when the Tablet mode of Windows 10 is off.

  1. Hey, I have a question regarding the “most recent used” list and associated jump lists. My problem is: When you right-click on a application and select “do not show on this list” the application WILL NEVER reappear on the “most recent used” list, even if you cycle the sliders available in Windows 10 UI to off and then on again. This used to fix this problem in windows 7 for most recently used and jump lists. Not any more. Is there a registry setting (or some other setting) that controls this? See my post here:

Great job on the Windows Tweaker programs by the way!

  2. Any idea on why this works for Windows Explorer and Chrome, but not Office 2010/13?

It’s the only thing keeping me from upgrading my primary Win 7 machine, since I have a few xls spreadsheets I’m in and out of all day, and having them pinned to the app cuts about 5 clicks out of opening them then going to the recent files tab in the app itself.
