August 10, 2021 Cumulative Updates for Windows 10

Microsoft today released monthly cumulative updates for all supported operating systems. As usual, such updates do not bring with them any new features, but are aimed at fixing discovered bugs and vulnerabilities. Updates are already available in Windows Update.

Some of the updated Windows 10 versions share the common base, such as 2004, 20H2 and 21H1, and 1903 and 1909, so the share the change log.

Cumulative Updates for Windows 10 released on August 10, 2021

KB5005033

Applies to

  • May 2021 Update (version 21H1), OS Build 19043.1165
  • October 2020 Update (version 20H2), OS Build 19042.1165
  • May 2020 Update (version 2004), OS Build 19041.1165

The releases notes highlight the following.

Changes the default privilege requirement for installing drivers when using Point and Print. After installing this update, you must have administrative privileges to install drivers. If you use Point and Print, see KB5005652, Point and Print Default Behavior Change, and CVE-2021-34481 for more information.

KB5005031

Applies to Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1909 and related server products. The change log is similar to the above. It raises the OS version to Build 18363.1734.

KB5005030

OS Build 17763.2114. Applies to Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC and its family of enterprise products. Shares the same change log.

KB5005043

This patch is available for Windows 10, version 1607, all editions, and for Windows Server 2016, all editions. It raises the OS version to Build 14393.4583 and includes the following fixes.

Fixes and changes

  • Addresses an issue that renders some Yu Gothic and Yu Mincho characters incorrectly in vertical writing mode.
  • Addresses an issue with zoom that occurs when using Microsoft Edge IE Mode on devices that use multiple high-DPI monitors.
  • Addresses an issue that causes Windows to stop working when it uses AppLocker to validate a file that has multiple signatures. The error is 0x3B.
  • Addresses an issue that might log requests for the wrong endpoint.
  • Changes the default privilege requirement for installing drivers when using Point and Print. After installing this update, you must have administrative privileges to install drivers. KB5005040

The update is for Windows 10 build 10240, which is the initial version of Windows 10. KB5005040 bumps the OS build number to 10240.19022 and comes with just one fix.

If you have one of the supported versions of Windows 10 installed, it should receive updates automatically. To speed up this process, you can manually trigger the update process by opening the Settings app. There, go to Update & recovery > Windows Update, and click on the Check for updates button.
