A developer by the name of hackhive has created a unique extension that does not block YouTube ads but instead speeds them up. This extension, known as Ad Speedup, automatically detects advertisements and speeds them up by 16 times. So it turns a 30-second commercial into a matter of seconds.
In addition to speeding up ads, Ad Speedup also mutes their sound, and the next update will even automatically click the "Skip" button. You can find he extension on the Chrome Web Store. It is also compatible with the Edge browser. The developer plans to expand its support to other video platforms in the future.
Interestingly, just a few days before the release of Ad Speedup, a similar add-on called Ad Accelerator has become available in the Web Store. Ad Accelerator speeds up ads by 10 times and already includes automatic clicking of the skip button.
Last week, YouTube addressed the issue of slower loading times on browsers with ad blockers, primarily Firefox. According to representatives from YouTube, this is their strategy to combat ad blockers, not browsers themselves.
The day before this announcement, users on Reddit had reported experiencing a decrease in YouTube's performance. Users have quickly discovered a JavaScript code ultimately slowing down the page by five seconds.
YouTube has been actively taking action against ad blockers since October. In their test mode, the platform started showing nags to users who did not add YouTube to their list of exceptions for ad blockers, informing them that the video player would be blocked. It also stated that after watching three ad-blocked videos without a subscription will restrict access to the video player.
