Windows 10’s aggressive upgrade offer will disappear after July 29

There are many users who are extremely unhappy with the way Microsoft is pushing Windows 10. They are constantly releasing special updates, which nag the user to migrate from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10. Even if you block them, they get unblocked automatically. With every such update, it is harder and harder to say "no", because of misleading UI and lack of clear choice to refuse the upgrade.

Many users are curious what will happen when the free upgrade offer period ends. Journalists from WinBeta contacted Microsoft to ask this question. This is what they got back:

"Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down."

So, if you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8, after July 29th, the Get Windows 10 app will be removed from your PC. This is definitely good news for those who are not planning to upgrade to Windows 10.

Soon after this announcement, Microsoft made the following amendment:

As you may have heard, the free Windows 10 upgrade offer for customers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is set to end on July 29, but we want to clarify that that deadline will *not* apply to customers who use assistive technologies. We are continuing to deliver on our previously-shared vision for accessibility for Windows 10 and we are committed to ensuring that users of assistive technologies have the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 for free as we do so.

Interestingly, WinBeta noted the following:

Now, although Microsoft is refusing to comment on whether the upgrade offer will be extended, there’s technically nothing stopping the company from changing its mind closer to the time. If that happens, then the Get Windows 10 app will likely remain on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 desktops until Microsoft begins charging for Windows 10 upgrades.

If this happens, the upgrade offer will become more annoying. (via WinBeta).

  1. It is time for an alternative to Windows to roll out. A good linux front end that can run Windows programs or even load windows itself

  2. They won’t “change their minds” before July 29. This is all a push to get more people to upgrade to Windows 10.

“HURRY UP! If you don’t upgrade before July 29, you’ll have to pay!”

Nah. They’ll reinstitute free upgrades a week later. Microsoft cares about nothing, nothing at all, more than getting you, yes YOU SITTING THERE, to upgrade to Windows 10.

Microsoft would chain the doors then burn a kindergarten full of cute toddlers to the ground if it would convince a single solitary person to upgrade to Windows 10. That is all they care about. “The end justifies the means.” And you think they’re going to stop free upgrades? Never. Not in a million years.
