Thunderbird, one of the best open source email clients got updated recently. The new version is 38.0.1 and I would like to share with you what is new in this version.

mozilla thunderbird logo bannerThunderbird is my preferred email client of choice. I use this app on every PC and on every operating system I use. It is stable, contains all the features you need, supports add-ons and also comes with a useful RSS reader. I am using Thunderbird for many years and never felt the need to look for an alternative.

As you might be knowing, Thunderbird used to be Mozilla's project but Mozilla decided to discontinue development on it. Now it is developed only by community members, so new releases appear more slowly than they used to in the Mozilla era.

Thunderbird 38.0.1 features lots of notable changes:

  1. Integration with the popular Lightning add-on: Lightning implements a calendar for Thunderbird. It is close to the calendar you get in Microsoft Outlook. Now Lightning has been combined with Thunderbird, however, it is not enabled by default. You need to activate it using a special option in Preferences.

  2. The GMail feature now supports OAuth2 authentication, removing the need to manually select the "allow less secure applications" option in Google account settings.
  3. Added the ability to filter sent and archived messages. The appropriate triggers were added to launch the filter event.
  4. The ability to use the maildir format for email accounts. With the maildir format, every email message will be stored in a separate file.
  5. The ability to search in multiple/all address books.
  6. Implemented support for internationalized domain name URLs for RSS feeds.
  7. More columns were added to the folders pane. Now it can show the total amount of messages stored in the folder and the size of the folder.
  8. Chat: lots of improvements in Jabber/XMPP, IRC. Added support for Yahoo! Messenger protocol.
  9. Lots of other improvements and bug fixes. You can read the complete change log HERE.

So, the release of Thunderbird 38.0.1 looks very interesting. While personally, I don't like the idea of Lightning being integrated into Thunderbird, it should not be an issue for most users. If you didn't have Lightning installed, you won't even notice its presence since it is not activated by default. All the rest of the changes made by the developer community have made Thunderbird more useful and feature-rich. You can grab Thunderbird 38.0.1 using the following link:

  1. EM Client + PostBox are very good and feature rich compared to Thunderbird.
Outlook 2013 still leads the way. Try and get an educational licence or office pack.

Thunderbird v38.x is *STILL* years behind these other clients in so many ways! Less intuitive. Less customisable. Less minimum standard features and functions!

I ended up settling with EM Client as primary Email client rather than Outlook (very big!).

NOTE: Be careful with ALL email clients using IMAP. They ALL seem to use *excessive* amounts of bandwidth!!!
