Microsoft Edge extensions can be easily used in Chrome

During the short period of time when the pre-release Microsoft Edge Extensions website was accessible, some lucky users were able to download the three available extensions. It was discovered that after doing some simple modifications, Edge's extensions can be easily adapted to be used in Chrome.

Probably the reverse would also be possible, but at this time there is no version of Edge with extensions support.

Microsoft intentionally made Edge extensions compatible with Google Chrome. My friend from MDL forums, by the username 'BAV0' has confirmed that it is possible to make Edge extensions work in Chrome. He managed to run all of them successfully.

BAV0 says he performed a number of minor modifications to the extensions to make their manifest files installable in Chrome and removed empty stub files. After that, all three extensions made for Edge worked in Chrome without any issues:

While this Edge->Chrome compatibility doesn’t guarantee complete compatibility in the other direction, it sure looks like that’s what Microsoft is aiming for. The source code for these Edge extensions pretty much looks like the original Chrome code with some additional code to replace "chrome" with "msBrowser" and 2 minor additions to manifest.json.

  1. Hmmm. Thanks for the tip! I remember that MS said that Chrome Extensions were easily ported to Edge… Didn’t think the reverse was also true!
