Fix: Store Beta app does not work in Windows 10

If you have been testing Windows 10, you will know that it comes with two Store apps. One is the old Windows 8 Store app with a green market icon and the other is the fresh one in beta stage at this moment (has a grey tile). Starting with build 9926, the Store Beta app offers Insiders the ability to test universal Office Preview apps. However, some users have been facing an issue when they open the Store beta app. It refuses to open or shows error messages about not being able to update. Here is how you can fix the issue.

  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. In the elevated command prompt you opened, type the following:
    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"
  3. Press Enter and wait till the command finishes its work.
  4. Reboot Windows 10.

Now the Store Beta app should work. If you still have issues with it, try to set your Region and Locale to English (United States) from the Region Control Panel and then try opening the app again. However, for most users, changing the Region is not necessary (via).

  1. You have to free the cache:
    Remove all files in the below folder : C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

    If you can’t see the folder then enable hidden files to be seen in settings.

  2. We just upgraded from windows 8.1 to 10, the problem we had was everytime my wife tried to open the store, it would close a few seconds later. I’ve read everything about this issue and nothing that was suggested worked. What did work was adjusting the screen resolution. This immediately solved the problem we where having.

    1. i have the same problem .. i tryed your suggestion. but stil it didnt work.. im fed up off it ,, the sotre works until i click on any app or game or whatever i want to download .. then it turns off

  3. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 and initially everything was fine. Then apps from Windows store – Mail, Calendar, Photos, One Note, etc just stopped working. When I try to open any of them I get the message: “This app cant open. Check Windows Store about ‘the app’. Go to the store”. But when I click to go to store it just closes. I have tried every suggestion and nothing works. Very frustrating. I contemplated reverting back to my old windows. And now Ive heard that Windows 10 is just downloading by default!! Its crazy. Dont know what to do.

  4. Hi, I follow your steps and instead of the store icon i get an icon that reads this:

    @{microsoft.windowstore_2015.25.50…resources/tile (and a string of numbers i CANT COPY)

    Is there a whay to de activate the command? To go erase the entry?

    Please help. I can’t access the store at all!!!

    1. Can you tell me why you are trying to apply fixes for BETA app in a pre-release build to the RTM version of Windows 10?

      1. I am in California. On DEC 17 my computer was updated to version 1511 and my store stop working, so was people, sports, mail, etc. I applied the fix you suggested above: PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command “”

        The store button was deleted and a new button appeared, named: @{Microsoft.Windowsstore_2015.25.7.0_x64_8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.Windowsstore/resources/storetile}

        I have a jpg. How can i send to you?

  5. Hi Sergey,

    I hope you are enjoying the holidays. Please help me resolve my problem.
    The store button was deleted and a new button appeared, named: @{Microsoft.Windowsstore_2015.25.7.0_x64_8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.Windowsstore/resources/storetile}

    Now i have a bunch more, one for Zune,windows messaging, bing translator, windows alarm, windows calculator, etc. All the new entries on the Start window, begin with the same:

    @{Microsoft.Windowszune….
    @{Microsoft.WindowsCalculator….
    @{Microsoft.Windowsalarm….
    etc….

    Happy holidays

    thanks
    Julian
