Enable smooth scrolling in Google Chrome

In Google Chrome, there is a hidden secret feature which enables a very cool and smooth scrolling effect while you browse web pages and scroll up and down with the keyboard, touchscreen or mouse. If you are interested in trying it, here is how you can activate it.

As you might already be knowing, Google Chrome comes with a number of useful options which are experimental. They are not supposed to be used by regular users but enthusiasts and testers can easily turn them on. These experimental features can significantly improve the user experience of the Chrome browser by enabling additional functionality.

One such feature is smooth scrolling. The flag to enable smooth scrolling was present in Google Chrome for a long time but the implementation wasn't really smooth. For a few releases, it disappeared but now it is back and once enabled, the scrolling is exceptionally smooth. To enable it, do the following.

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser and type the following text into the address bar:
    chrome://flags/#enable-smooth-scrolling

This will open the flags page directly with the relevant setting.

  2. The setting is called "Smooth Scrolling". It will enable the experimental smooth scrolling implementation. Click the Enable link as shown below:Chrome enable smooth scrolling
  3. The link text will be changed from "Enable" to "Disable" and the Relaunch Now button will appear at the bottom. Click it to restart the browser:Chrome smooth scrolling relaunch

That's it. After restarting Chrome, check out the scrolling behavior on any website like our Winaero blog. Press page up or page down, or scroll with the mouse wheel or using touch gestures. You will see that scrolling is very much improved. If you don't like this new scrolling behavior and prefer speed with any smooth transitions, you can always disable it by visiting the chrome://flags/#enable-smooth-scrolling flag page again. Personally I love smooth scrolling since it also helps me to preserve context while reading a long article.

Tell us in the comments what you think about this smooth scrolling feature of Google Chrome. On operating systems like Android, if you have a fast enough device, you already have had smooth scrolling for a long time.

  1. So, this seems to work for some sites, on some accounts, but one of my more-recent Google accounts insists on smooth scrolling across Google sites, gmail, etc, even with this flag disabled :-(
